Councilwoman Kotaphira Arculum

Kotaphira found herself once again in Verusk’s study, much to her displeasure.

“Good morning, Councilwoman.” Verusk seemed to have a pull at the corner of his mouth, and for what, Kotaphira could not conclude why. He knew something, and seemed on edge to tell it. Inside his study once more, she moved to stand before his desk where he sat, head tilted to the side and elbows on the arms of his chair, fingers interlaced.

“Good morning.” She was curt but not cold.

“What updates have you?” he asked, head straightening.

“What updates have you?” she retorted, sitting across from him.

This made him smile, dropping his hands down to tap the surface of his desk, “Cunning! Alright, I shall indulge you first, my lady,” he paused, mouth open, “if you agree to something.” There again was a mischievous twinkle in his eye, and she groaned inwardly.

“What is it, Verusk?” She tinged his name up at the end of her sentence in a threat. He had better make it good.

“You seem to have a particular knack for disposing of our high level guards at inopportune times.”

She felt herself stiffen, wondering if he had finally caught on and had decided to blackmail her.

“I want you to dispose of the sergeant Rotham Rideat from flying duty. No questions asked.”

“Hah!” she exclaimed, “that only causes more questions! That is a tall order to ask in exchange for simple information.”

“Simple?” he asked, sipping his tea, “based on the information you want to know from me, I would hardly call that simple. The truth is, I know you are hiding something big, from everyone. I have an inkling it has something to do with Princess Mylla’s mysterious disappearance, but you are about to explain, are you not?”

Self preservation.

Verusk sat back in his chair, the late morning sunlight shining through the window behind him over his left shoulder to light a part of Kotaphira’s face and clothes. “Do this for me, I’ll tell you my update and you can tell me yours. We are confidants to each other, are we not?”

“Confidants do not require favors in exchange for information. But my curiosity has gotten the best of me, I must admit,” she paused, squinting in thought as she considered his plan, “fine, but make it worth my effort.”

A smile cracked on the Night-Elfirrin’s face as he leaned forward, “Prince Jonvis has captured the Vessifer for raping your right-hand mage.”

Despite the slow delivery of the sentence, the entirety of it made her head spin. She wished she’d gone first in delivering her updates. No wonder the girl was in such a state.

Do you feel... guilty?

No, she didn’t feel guilty. But she had been blind to the girl’s pain and physical state because she was in such a hurry to get to Rinlear.

He is more important.

But if the Vessifer is captured, then she could get her hands on the notes of the Heraghine. Healing Rinlear was a possibility!

“I will handle it.”

“No, Councilwoman. The visitor has to be tried for his actions, that is an assault against one of our mages.
